A friend suggested this restaurant for a Sunday brunch. Bairro Alto is a quirky, hidden gem in Peakham Rye that serve authentic /infused Portuguese food along with the Portuguese hospitality. What makes this quirky is when you look at the front; the colour and the shape of the building seems to standing out comparing to the surroundings, but also pay attention to the layout of the resturant inside. It seems nothing seems straight. Which definitely addes a touch to the character. The second thing that surprised me was the portion of the food. I ordered a Kimci cashew salad which is not heavy to eat, however I only managed to eat half of it and I had to ask the rest as take away. I think the blame would be the Morning Magic smoothie that I drank in no time. I would never think of adding espresso to a smoothie but here is the proof; Morning Magic! It's a small restaurant with limited seats inside and the staff are lovely (and yes , some staff are Portogues). My friend and I had such a good time that we forgot the time, and they had to remind us that they were closing in few minutes. It's definitely worth the 15min walk from the train station + getting lost.

We came in for a Father's Day brunch today. Great food and friendly service. Nice vibe, especially considering the road outside is kinda busy. Can't understand why this place isn't busier. It's good!

We had breakfast at Bairro Alto in Peckham this week, and it was honestly one of the nicest starts to the day I’ve had in a while. The food was great proper flavour, well-cooked, generous portions. Nothing fancy for the sake of it, just really tasty, satisfying breakfast done right. Even better, it was really good value. So many places nearby have crept up in price without improving what they offer, but this felt fair and honest. The team were warm, upbeat and attentive without being over the top. It might sound small, but when so many cafés and restaurants now seem to struggle with the basics good service, decent prices, a bit of manners this visit felt like a bit of a treat. Would happily go back. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area.

Amazing experience at Bairro Alto! The food was absolutely delicious with generous portions, and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier. Great value for money — definitely a place I’ll be coming back to! We had the cheese patties & cod croquettes to start, the steak & chicken with Portuguese rice for main and then both had the pastel de nata for dessert - all was excellent!

Tucked away on Rye Lane, Bairro Alto feels like a hidden gem in the bustle of South East London. From the moment you walk in, there’s warmth — the kind of charm that makes you feel at home even if it’s your first visit. The food is heart-warming and authentic: generous portions, simple yet lovingly prepared Portuguese classics with plenty of flavour. I tried the sardine crostini, fish stew, potato salad , corn rib, — rich, filling, with just the right balance of spices — Starters like the cheese patties and cod croquettes also impressed — comforting, familiar, but with enough character to make them memorable. Service was friendly and unpretentious. The atmosphere is relaxed, not pretentious — ideal for a casual dinner, catch-ups with friends, or simply winding down. Prices feel fair for what you get: soulful food, decent drinks, and an experience that’s more than the sum of its parts. If you’re in Peckham and craving something genuinely comforting, Bairro Alto is well worth a visit. It may still be under the radar — which only adds to its appeal — but deserves much more attention.

Good wine, good food and excellent value! They catered well for a gluten free diner and the service was very good.

We’ve ordered the same and don't regret as it was so good i wouldn't have shared it. Comfy food, so tasty we cant wait to come back and order other things. The espresso martini was perfect, not too sweet, just perfect and with good quality coffee.

Absolutely wonderful food and value for the money. My plate of vegan feijoada was HUGE, delicious and very filling. I could only eat half and took the rest for takeaways. Chunky portions of mushrooms and tofu mixed well with the black beans. The two orange cuts also complemented. My friend also praised her roasted half chicken. My glass was branco was delicious as well: perfectly dry and a touch effervescent. Very sad we seemed to be the only diners that evening. This place is a gem and deserves more business. As starters we also shared the yummy and gooey cheese starters and the bacalao croquettes. Would definitely return!
